Al-Muizz Street is the monumental spine of historic Fatimid Cairo, running between Bab al-Futuh and Bab Zuwayla through one of the world’s densest concentrations of Islamic architecture.
Historical Overview
Al-Muizz Street follows the principal north–south axis of the Fatimid city founded in 969 CE and takes its modern name from the Fatimid caliph al-Muizz li-Din Allah. Stretching from Bab al-Futuh in the north toward Bab Zuwayla in the south, the route passes through the historic commercial and ceremonial heart of Cairo. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities describes twenty-nine monuments along the street, representing periods from the Fatimids through the Ayyubids, Mamluks, Ottomans and Muhammad Ali dynasty. Mosques, madrasas, mausoleums, sabil-kuttabs, palaces, hammams, defensive gates and commercial buildings stand alongside active shops and markets. Important stops include the Qalawun complex, Sultan Barquq’s madrasa, al-Aqmar Mosque, Bayt al-Suhaymi and numerous smaller monuments. The street is therefore best treated as a walking archaeological district rather than a single building.
