Wikala of Nafisa al-Bayda
Southern Al-Muizz / Bab Zuweila
Explore a late eighteenth-century merchant caravanserai once famous for its candle trade, with traditional shops, mashrabiyya windows and upper rooms designed to accommodate travelling merchants.
Historical Overview
The main façade faces Al-Muizz Street and combines street-level shops with upper residential accommodation screened by mashrabiyyas. The entrance leads toward additional shops, while the upper floors contained rooms for merchants travelling through Cairo. Nafisa al-Bayda also commissioned the nearby sabil-kuttab, which we treat as a separate attraction.
Why Visit?
Together with Bazar'a and al-Ghuri's Wikala, this site helps tourists understand the network of merchant inns, storage spaces and commercial buildings that made medieval and Ottoman Cairo a major trading city.
