Al-Hussein / Al-Gamaliya

مسجد الإمام الحسينDYNAMIC ACCESS

Experience one of Cairo's most revered Islamic sanctuaries, a living mosque and pilgrimage destination beside Khan al-Khalili whose history extends from the Fatimid era to the grand nineteenth-century building seen today.

Historical Overview

Al-Hussein Mosque stands at the centre of one of Cairo's most intensely visited religious districts, immediately beside Khan al-Khalili and close to Al-Azhar. The shrine is associated, according to a tradition recorded by Egyptian historians and presented by the Ministry of Awqaf, with the head of al-Husayn ibn Ali.

Why Visit?

This is one of the strongest places in Cairo to experience living Islamic religious culture. The surrounding square is also a major transition point between Al-Azhar, Al-Hussein, Khan al-Khalili, and Al-Muizz.
