Khan al-Khalili

Khan al-Khalili developed as part of Cairo’s long-standing commercial core in the al-Hussein and al-Gamaliya area. The market takes its name from Amir Jarkas al-Khalili, who established a major khan on the site during the Mamluk period. Over centuries the surrounding streets became a dense network of shops, workshops, coffeehouses and trading spaces serving both local residents and visitors. The value of Khan al-Khalili today is not that it functions as a preserved museum quarter, but that commerce remains embedded within the historic urban fabric of Islamic Cairo. Traditional metalwork, lamps, jewelry, textiles, spices and souvenirs are mixed with everyday businesses, historic cafés and nearby religious monuments. The market is therefore best understood as living heritage rather than a single ticketed attraction.
