Cairo Governorate describes Khan al-Khalili as a historic market more than 600 years old, located in the Al-Hussein area of Al-Gamaliya. It takes its name from its founder, Amir Jarkas al-Khalili, and was one of dozens of markets operating along Cairo's major commercial routes during the Mamluk period.
