Historical Overview

Pharos Island, located off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt, is renowned for its historical significance as the site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Constructed around 280 BC during the reign of Ptolemy II, this remarkable structure stood approximately 100 meters high and served as a guiding beacon for sailors navigating the busy harbor of Alexandria, symbolizing the city's status as a center of trade and knowledge in the ancient Mediterranean world. The lighthouse was designed by the Greek architect Sostratus of Cnidus and featured a three-tiered structure: a square base, a middle octagonal section, and a circular top, crowned with a statue of Zeus or Poseidon. The Pharos Lighthouse not only facilitated maritime navigation but also became a cultural icon, representing innovation and architectural brilliance of the Hellenistic period. Despite its eventual destruction by a series of earthquakes between the 12th and 15th centuries, the legacy of the lighthouse endures, and it remains a powerful symbol of Alexandria's rich heritage. Today, visitors to Alexandria can explore the remnants of the ancient city and learn about the Pharos Island's storied past at the nearby Alexandria National Museum and the Citadel of Qaitbay, built on the original site of the lighthouse. While the lighthouse itself no longer stands, the island offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and provides a glimpse into the vibrant history of Alexandria. Guided tours are available, allowing tourists to immerse themselves in the ancient culture and marvel at the city that once housed one of the greatest architectural feats of the ancient world. Visitor planning: Knowledge-layer or research-oriented record. Do not route ordinary tourists here unless current public access is separately confirmed. This attraction forms part of Eastern Harbour Historic Landscape. Parent-site context: Historic eastern harbour landscape of Alexandria, shaped from the Hellenistic city through later medieval and modern phases. Alexandria’s Eastern Harbour occupies part of the ancient maritime setting of the city founded in 331 BCE. Its importance developed through the Ptolemaic and Roman eras and continued to change in medieval and modern Alexandria. Qaitbay Citadel, added in the late 15th century at the harbour entrance, is a much later layer and should not be used to date the harbour itself. Plan roughly 15 to 45 minutes for this component. The recorded recommended transport mode is taxi or ride hail.
