Gebel al-Silsila
Explore Gebel al-Silsila, an ancient sandstone quarry near Aswan, rich in history and stunning rock-cut temples.
Historical Overview
Gebel al-Silsila is one of Egypt’s most important ancient sandstone-quarry landscapes, located between Edfu and Kom Ombo. Quarrying occurred across a long span of time and became especially intensive during the New Kingdom, when sandstone was supplied for major temple-building programs throughout Upper Egypt. Rock-cut shrines, stelae, inscriptions and quarry faces preserve evidence for expeditions, officials and the sacred importance of the Nile narrows.
