Historical Overview
The Temple of Isis in Aswan is a distinct Ptolemaic temple located on the eastern bank of the city, near the eastern edge of Aswan. It was built in part during the reigns of Ptolemy III and Ptolemy IV and dedicated to Isis. The monument was later converted into a church, probably dedicated to Saint Mary, and preserves Coptic inscriptions as well as evidence of later Roman and Islamic occupation around the sanctuary. It was discovered in 1871 and remains unusually well preserved, including its roof. This monument is separate from the Temple of Isis at Philae.
