Tomb of Heqaib
The tomb of Pepinakht Heqaib at Qubbet el-Hawa belongs to a late Sixth Dynasty governor and expedition leader who served under Pepi II.
Historical Overview
Pepinakht, known by the epithet Heqaib, was a governor of Elephantine and expedition leader under Pepi II near the end of the Sixth Dynasty. His tomb at Qubbet el-Hawa preserves autobiographical inscriptions describing expeditions to Nubia and is a key source for Egypt’s southern administration at the end of the Old Kingdom. Heqaib later became the focus of a local cult on Elephantine. The tomb should be identified with this late Sixth Dynasty official rather than described generically as a priestly burial.
