Historical Overview
Al-Mahmudiyya Mosque was built in 975 AH / 1567–1568 CE by Mahmud Pasha and stands on the edge of Salah al-Din Square opposite Cairo Citadel. Its elevated prayer hall is reached by a flight of steps, giving the building a distinctive relationship with the surrounding square and fortress landscape. The mosque belongs to the early Ottoman period in Egypt and combines a compact prayer space with a mausoleum. Its visual character is marked by a slender Ottoman-style minaret, coloured wooden ceilings and stained-plaster windows. Because it stands beside one of Cairo’s most important historic squares, the monument is best understood as part of the wider Citadel and Sultan Hasan urban ensemble rather than as an isolated stop. Current public visitor hours and a standalone ticket were not verified during this audit.
Why Visit?
Al-Mahmudiyya adds an early Ottoman layer to the architectural sequence around Salah al-Din Square and provides a useful contrast with the neighboring Mamluk monuments.
