Historical Overview
The popular name, the 'Blue Mosque,' comes from the blue-dominated ceramic tiles covering portions of the walls and attached funerary area. Built in 1346, Ibrahim Agha carried out major renovations and extensions in 1651.

The Blue Mosque is especially useful for explaining how Cairo's monuments evolved rather than remaining frozen in one era: a medieval Mamluk foundation was transformed by later Ottoman patronage while preserving important earlier architectural elements.
