Bab Zuweila

Southern Al-Muizz

باب زويلةOpen to Public

Climb through one of medieval Cairo's greatest surviving gates, where massive Fatimid towers support the twin minarets of the later Al-Mu'ayyad Mosque and centuries of dramatic history meet the bustling southern end of Al-Muizz Street.

Historical Overview

The gate consists of two semicircular towers flanking a central passage approximately 4.82 metres wide. More than three centuries later, Sultan al-Mu'ayyad Shaykh built his mosque beside the gate and used the two Fatimid towers as the bases for the mosque's minarets, creating one of Cairo's most distinctive combinations of military and religious architecture. Bab Zuweila also witnessed one of the defining moments in Egyptian history: in 1517, the final Mamluk sultan, Tuman Bay, was executed here after the Ottoman conquest, marking the end of Mamluk rule.

Why Visit?

If Bab al-Futuh is the ideal start of an Al-Muizz walk, Bab Zuweila is the ideal finish. It gives the visitor a clear physical understanding of the length of the original Fatimid city and leads naturally into Al-Ghuriyya and the monuments of the southern historic quarter.
