Historical Overview
Bayt Al-Suhaymi is one of Cairo's finest surviving examples of traditional domestic architecture. Unlike the monumental mosques and madrasas surrounding it, the house offers a much more intimate view of historical life. Its rooms open onto picturesque internal courtyards and feature extensive wooden mashrabiyya screens, decorated ceilings and reception spaces. The house included separate spaces associated with receiving guests and family life, alongside practical facilities such as wells, a waterwheel, storage areas and a mill. The Ministry's detailed brochure also identifies the takhtabush, courtyards, salamlik and haramlik spaces as important features of its architectural organisation.
