Madrasa and Khanqah of Sultan al-Zahir Barquq

Enter one of Bayn al-Qasrayn's great Mamluk monuments, where a grand courtyard, richly coloured marble, a magnificent qibla iwan and a funerary dome reveal the architectural ambitions of Sultan Barquq.
Historical Overview
The building is organised around an open courtyard with four iwans. The southeastern qibla iwan is the largest and includes a marble mihrab, wooden minbar, Qur'an stand and the raised platform used by the prayer repeater. The foundation also contained accommodation for students and Sufis along with practical facilities such as a kitchen and service areas. Its mausoleum contains members of Barquq's family, including his father and several wives and children.
Why Visit?
The complex marks an important architectural transition from the Bahri Mamluk monuments immediately beside it to the Circassian Mamluk period. It is also one of the best interiors on Al-Muizz for seeing coloured marble and monumental courtyard architecture.
