Discover a rarely visited chapter of Cairo's Jewish history at the synagogue associated with Maimonides, the celebrated medieval philosopher and physician, with its marble bimah, Torah ark, yeshiva and historic ritual spaces.
Historical Overview
The synagogue's marble entrance is decorated with a representation of the Tablets of the Ten Commandments and inscriptions in Arabic and Hebrew. Inside, the rectangular prayer hall contains a central marble bimah used for Torah reading. The eastern wall holds the Torah ark, while an upper women's section overlooks the prayer space. A second part of the complex contains rooms associated with a yeshiva, or Jewish religious school, along with a water well and a room historically connected with Maimonides' burial before his remains were transferred elsewhere.
