مجموعة السلطان الغوريOpen to Public

Explore one of late Mamluk Cairo's most spectacular ensembles, where a mosque and madrasa face a richly decorated mausoleum, khanqah and sabil-kuttab across a narrow historic street once covered by a wooden canopy.

Historical Overview

The complex was designed as more than a mosque. It integrated religious teaching, Sufi accommodation, charity, burial architecture and residential functions into a dense urban ensemble. The mausoleum is especially notable for its decorated mihrab, while the khanqah retains an ornate wooden ceiling with gilded decoration. Al-Ghuri himself was not buried in the mausoleum, because he died in Syria during the Battle of Marj Dabiq in 1516.

Why Visit?

This is one of the strongest stops for understanding the final flowering of Mamluk architecture immediately before the Ottoman conquest of Egypt.
