Wikala Bazar'a
Fatimid Cairo / Northern Al-Muizz
Step into one of Ottoman Cairo's finest surviving caravanserais, where merchants once stored their goods on the lower floors while residential apartments above combined commercial life with remarkable privacy and traditional mashrabiyya architecture.
Historical Overview
Wikala Bazar'a follows the traditional inward-looking caravanserai plan: commercial and storage spaces are organised around a rectangular courtyard, while residential units occupy the upper levels. One particularly interesting feature is the separation of commercial and residential circulation. Merchants and residents could reach the upper living quarters through a separate entrance rather than passing directly through the commercial courtyard, reflecting the importance of privacy in Cairene domestic architecture.
Why Visit?
This is a valuable companion to Bayt Al-Suhaymi. Bayt Al-Suhaymi explains historic domestic life, while Bazar'a explains how trade, warehousing, accommodation and residential architecture worked together inside a commercial building.
