Bubasteion
Discover Bubasteion, a documented heritage record in Giza Governorate associated with العصر المتأخر وما بعده.
Historical Overview
The Bubasteion at Saqqara is an archaeological zone associated with the cult of the cat goddess Bastet and with extensive animal burials and elite tombs cut into the escarpment. The area became especially important from the Late Period onward, when Saqqara served as a major center for sacred-animal cults. Archaeological work in the wider Bubasteion has revealed cat burials, cult installations and important New Kingdom tombs reused or rediscovered within the same landscape. Because the Bubasteion is an archaeological research zone inside the broader Saqqara necropolis rather than a consistently open standalone attraction, visitor access can be limited or route-dependent.
Why Visit?
The Bubasteion is important for understanding sacred-animal cults at Saqqara and the reuse of an archaeological landscape across multiple periods.
