Historical Overview

The Grand Egyptian Museum, or GEM, was created to present the history of ancient Egypt on a scale appropriate to the monuments of nearby Giza. Its visitor route combines the vast Grand Hall, the monumental Grand Staircase, permanent galleries organized around Egyptian society and kingship, the Khufu Boats Museum and the Tutankhamun Galleries. The museum’s design deliberately frames views toward the pyramids, linking the collections with the archaeological landscape from which much of Egypt’s royal history emerged. The Tutankhamun display is a central attraction, presenting the young king’s burial assemblage in a dedicated gallery context rather than scattering major objects across multiple museums. GEM should be treated as a major destination in its own right rather than a brief add-on to the pyramids: the official visit information recommends timed entry, and the amount of material makes a half-day visit realistic for many travelers.

Why Visit?

GEM is essential for connecting the monuments you see at Giza, Saqqara and Luxor with the sculpture, royal objects and funerary material preserved in museum collections.
