Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum
Explore the Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum, a Nile-side palace known for its European fine-art collection and historic interiors.
Historical Overview
Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum occupies the former Giza residence of politician and art collector Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil and his wife Emiline Lock. The collection is especially important for European nineteenth-century painting and sculpture, alongside decorative arts and works connected with Egyptian collecting history. The museum’s significance lies both in the art itself and in the story of private collecting that later became part of Egypt’s public cultural heritage. The museum remains part of Egypt's active public art-museum network. In May 2026 the Ministry of Culture included the Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum among the museums participating in International Museum Day programming with free public entry, confirming current visitor operation. The State Information Service also describes the collection as one of Egypt's most important holdings of European nineteenth-century painting, sculpture and decorative arts, displayed in the former Khalil residence overlooking the Nile. As event schedules and admission arrangements can change, visitors should confirm current opening details before a dedicated visit. Official cultural records describe the museum as the former residence of Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil and his wife, with the building dating to around 1915 and designed in a French style. The collection contains more than three hundred paintings and over fifty sculptures, with major nineteenth-century European works alongside ceramics and decorative arts. Artists represented include Monet, Gauguin, Rodin, Renoir, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Pissarro and others. The museum also includes a space for changing exhibitions by Egyptian and international artists. This combination of historic residence, permanent international collection and temporary exhibition activity makes it substantially different from Cairo's antiquities museums and particularly relevant to visitors focused on modern collecting and European art in Egypt.
Why Visit?
