Tomb of Panehsy
Explore Tomb of Panehsy, a funerary monument in Saqqara associated with الدولة الحديثة, preserving evidence for burial practice, elite identity and ancient Egyptian religious belief.
Historical Overview
The Tomb of Panehsy belongs to Saqqara’s New Kingdom cemetery and is associated with a high official who served during the reign of Ramesses II. Archaeological work has documented the tomb’s architecture, reliefs and inscriptions as part of the important cluster of New Kingdom elite monuments at Saqqara. Its value is substantial for understanding the revival of Saqqara as a burial place for senior officials during the Ramesside period. The tomb should not currently be presented as a reliably open tourist monument because excavation, conservation and site-management conditions can restrict access.
Why Visit?
Panehsy’s tomb is important for the New Kingdom history of Saqqara and for understanding elite burial outside the better-known Old Kingdom mastaba landscape.
