Tomb of Ti
The Mastaba of Ti is one of Saqqara’s finest Fifth Dynasty private tombs, celebrated for exceptionally detailed reliefs of farming, fishing, boatbuilding and daily life.
Historical Overview
Ti was a high-ranking Fifth Dynasty official who served in important administrative and architectural roles connected with royal building projects. His mastaba at Saqqara is among the most famous private tombs of the Old Kingdom because of the scale and quality of its relief decoration. The scenes cover an unusually broad range of activities, including agriculture, animal husbandry, food preparation, fishing, hippopotamus hunting, boatbuilding and craft production. These images are valuable not only artistically but also historically because they preserve detailed evidence for work, technology and social organization in Old Kingdom Egypt. The mastaba also contains serdab spaces associated with statues of the deceased, reinforcing the tomb’s role as a place where Ti’s spirit could receive offerings and remain connected to the world of the living. Practical planning: Public opening can vary. Confirm that the mastaba is open on the day of your visit and whether access is included in the active Saqqara ticket combination. Plan roughly 45 to 90 minutes for the visit. The current planning record recommends early morning as a practical time of day. The expected physical effort is medium. Heat exposure is recorded as high. The recorded recommended transport mode is car or ride hail. A licensed guide is recorded as required for access or navigation.
Why Visit?
Ti is one of the best choices at Saqqara if you want to understand everyday Old Kingdom life rather than focus only on kings, pyramids and royal burial.
