Obelisk of Hatshepsut
Discover the Obelisk of Hatshepsut, a stunning tribute to one of Egypt's first female pharaohs, located in Luxor's historic temple complex.
Historical Overview
Hatshepsut erected a pair of monumental obelisks at Karnak during the Eighteenth Dynasty. One still stands in the Precinct of Amun-Re at nearly 30 metres high, carved from Aswan granite and inscribed with texts linking the queen to Amun and her royal legitimacy. The obelisk in Central Park, New York, is not its twin; that monument is one of the so-called Cleopatra’s Needles, originally erected for Thutmose III. Hatshepsut’s obelisk is one of the clearest surviving statements of her building program at Karnak. Visitor planning: Internal Karnak POI.
