Historical Overview
The Ramesseum is the mortuary temple of Ramesses II on the Theban west bank, built during the Nineteenth Dynasty. It supported the king’s posthumous cult and the worship of Amun and other deities. Monumental pylons, courts, Osiride statues and battle reliefs—including scenes associated with Qadesh—expressed royal ideology. The earlier description oversimplified the monument as a temple dedicated to Osiris.
