Historical Overview

The tomb known as KV14 is one of the most unusual royal monuments in the Valley of the Kings because it was used by two rulers from successive dynasties. It was begun for Queen Tausret, who first held power as regent and later ruled as pharaoh at the end of the Nineteenth Dynasty. Her burial monument was later taken over and extended for Setnakht, founder of the Twentieth Dynasty. This reuse transformed the tomb into a long, complex monument with two burial chambers and decoration belonging to different phases. Some images and royal names associated with Tausret were altered when Setnakht appropriated the tomb, making KV14 particularly important for studying political transition, royal legitimacy and the reuse of sacred space. Its long straight axis and scale also make it one of the larger royal tombs in the valley. The monument preserves funerary scenes and texts linked with the journey through the afterlife and shows how a royal tomb could be adapted rather than simply abandoned. Practical planning: Opening can vary as part of Valley of the Kings tomb rotation. Confirm same-day access; when open as a standard tomb, it follows the Valley ticket system. Plan roughly 15 to 40 minutes for the visit. The current planning record recommends early morning as a practical time of day. The expected physical effort is medium. Heat exposure is recorded as high. The recorded recommended transport mode is car or ride hail.

Why Visit?

KV14 is one of the best tombs for understanding the turbulent transition between Egypt’s Nineteenth and Twentieth Dynasties because the monument physically records two royal burial programs.
