Historical Overview

The tomb of Tutankhamun, KV62, is the most famous discovery in the Valley of the Kings because Howard Carter found it in 1922 with much of its royal burial equipment still inside. Tutankhamun ruled during the Eighteenth Dynasty and died young after a reign of roughly nine years. The tomb itself is much smaller and less extensively decorated than many other royal tombs in the valley, a contrast that makes the extraordinary quantity of objects once packed inside even more striking. Around five thousand artefacts were recovered, ranging from furniture, chariots and weapons to jewelry, cosmetics and everyday objects from the royal household. Only the burial chamber carries substantial wall decoration, including funerary scenes and a scene from the Amduat. Visiting KV62 is therefore less about architectural scale than historical significance: it is the physical place behind one of archaeology’s most famous discoveries and provides direct context for Tutankhamun’s burial and mummy.

Why Visit?

Choose KV62 if the discovery story and Tutankhamun himself are priorities. The tomb is compact, but its historical importance is exceptional and the king’s mummy remains associated with the burial context.
