HELLO FROM CAIRO
There is an odd way some trips experience Cairo:
airport → hotel → pyramids → museum → airport.
It's understandable. The city is large, time is short, and the headline attractions are extraordinary.
But it means people can leave Cairo having seen Egypt's most famous monuments without really having seen much of Cairo.
So this week's opening story belongs to the city itself.

Cairo Before the Shops Open
Cairo rarely introduces itself quietly.
There is movement, traffic, voices, food, horns, delivery carts and people sharing space with a confidence that can overwhelm a first-time visitor.
But arrive early enough in Historic Cairo and you catch another version of the city.
A wooden door before it opens.
Stone façades without a crowd in front of them.
A minaret appearing above a narrow street instead of above traffic.
Then the shutters begin to rise.
Tea arrives.
The street returns.
This is why we don't want TrueCost to tell you only what Cairo costs.
Understanding the city also means understanding that Giza is one layer of an enormously longer story.
Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo, Downtown, the Nile and modern neighborhoods are not things you do after "seeing Cairo."
They are Cairo.

LUXOR · PLAN LATER
Luxor Temple currently stays open later than many archaeological sites
The Ministry currently lists Luxor Temple from 6 AM to 8 PM, with foreign admission of EGP 500 adult / EGP 250 student. (Egyptian Monuments)
That later closing time makes it particularly useful for itinerary design:
Morning: another archaeological site
Afternoon: rest
Evening: Luxor Temple
A site's hours don't just tell you when the gate is open.
They can change how many sightseeing days you need.
QENA · WORTH KNOWING
At Dendera, look up
Dendera's Temple of Hathor is among Egypt's best-preserved temple complexes and is particularly known for its astronomical ceiling scenes. The current official foreign-adult ticket is EGP 300, with additional panorama and serdab products listed separately. (Egyptian Monuments)
If you visit:
Don't walk through looking only at walls and columns.
Look above you.
Sometimes the most important instruction for a better visit is that simple.
CAIRO · ONE TICKET, MANY BUILDINGS
Al-Muizz isn't a single monument
The currently published combined foreign-adult ticket is EGP 220 and covers a group of historic buildings including the Qalawun complex, Sultan Barquq's madrasa and other monuments. Some locations such as Bayt al-Suhaymi are excluded and have their own arrangements. (Egyptian Monuments)
Again:
Combined ticket does not mean every building on the street.
Small distinction.
Useful distinction.
EGYPT, IN ONE DETAIL
What is a sabil-kuttab?
You'll encounter the term in Historic Cairo.
A sabil provided drinking water to the public.
A kuttab was an educational space.
At the Sabil-Kuttab of Abd al-Rahman Katkhuda on Al-Muizz Street, the water-distribution room occupied the lower section, while a school occupied the level above. The official description notes marble basins for water beneath copper windows and the educational space above. (Egyptian Monuments)
It's a good example of something we love about Cairo:
architecture wasn't simply decorative.
Buildings often tell you how the city functioned.
TASTE THIS
Taameya
If you've eaten falafel elsewhere in the Middle East, Egypt's version may look familiar and taste noticeably different.
Egyptian taameya is commonly made with fava beans rather than chickpeas, often producing a greener interior beneath the crisp exterior.
Try it simply first:
bread, taameya, salad, tahini or pickles.
It doesn't need to become a "food experience."
Sometimes the best way to understand a city is breakfast.

Your hotel standard.
Private transport.
Guides.
Dining.
Attractions.
How efficiently you group the city.
Two people can spend the same number of nights in Cairo and buy completely different trips.
SAVE THIS FOR YOUR TRIP
Group Cairo geographically.
Bad Cairo planning doesn't only cost money.
It costs hours.
Don't bounce between distant parts of the metropolitan area simply because a list put attractions in that order.
Build days around geography:
Giza / Saqqara
Historic Cairo
Museums / central Cairo
Your itinerary is also a transport strategy.
