A MOMENT IN EGYPT

Photographs Fail at Scale

From a distance, the Great Pyramid becomes almost abstract.

A triangle.

A skyline.

An icon you've seen so often that it can feel strangely familiar before you've ever been to Egypt.

Then you walk closer.

The clean outline disappears and becomes courses of enormous limestone blocks. Your eyes stop reading "pyramid" for a moment and start reading stone.

This is one of the reasons we think a good Giza visit should not be made only from the panoramic viewpoint.

Go close enough to understand the material first.

Then step back and see the monument again.

What you see now is not simply the original pyramid becoming old.

You're seeing a structure whose exterior appearance changed dramatically across thousands of years.

ALEXANDRIA · THIS MONTH

The Greco-Roman Museum has a temporary exhibition

The Greco-Roman Museum in Alexandria opened its first temporary archaeological exhibition since reopening, bringing out 21 pieces from its stored collections. The Ministry says the exhibition includes objects ranging from coins and lamps to pottery, papyri and finds connected with Alexandria's ancient life, and is scheduled to run through the end of September. Traveler impact: Worth checking if Alexandria falls in your itinerary this month.

Before going: Reconfirm the exhibition's final date and museum arrangements.

SAQQARA · KNOW YOUR TICKET

"A Saqqara ticket" can mean several different things

The currently published foreign-adult Saqqara Area ticket is EGP 600.

But separate products currently exist for options including:

Djoser's pyramid interior

the Serapeum

specific tombs

and a wider inclusive ticket. (Egyptian Monuments)

This is precisely why we don't like the phrase:

"How much is Saqqara?"

A better question is:

Which parts of Saqqara do you actually want to enter?

CAIRO · USEFUL TIMING

NMEC has Friday evening hours

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization currently lists regular daytime hours from 9 AM–5 PM and an additional Friday evening period from 6 PM–9 PM, with ticket sales ending at 8 PM. (Egyptian Monuments)

That can be useful when daylight hours are already occupied by archaeological sites.

Always reconfirm before building an itinerary around evening access.

LOOK CLOSER

The pyramids weren't always the color you see today

The Great Pyramid's exterior was once covered in fine white limestone.

And if you look at Khafre's pyramid, you can still see surviving casing near its top — a clue to how different the plateau would once have appeared. (Egyptian Monuments)

This is why looking closely changes the experience.

You're not simply seeing what ancient builders created.

You're also seeing what survived.

WORTH THE DETOUR

Dahshur

If Giza shows you the perfected monumental pyramid, Dahshur helps show you some of the experimentation that came before it.

The site includes Sneferu's Bent Pyramid and Red Pyramid, along with later pyramid remains. Egypt's Ministry currently lists foreign admission at EGP 200 adult / EGP 100 student. (Egyptian Monuments)

For someone deeply interested in pyramid development, this isn't merely "more pyramids."

It helps complete the story.

Worth considering if: Ancient Egyptian architecture is one of the main reasons you're coming to Egypt.

Easy to skip if: Your Cairo time is extremely limited and Giza is already your only archaeology day.

THE TRUECOST

Giza: EGP 700 doesn't mean "everything"

Current official foreign-adult Giza Plateau area entry is EGP 700.

The Ministry explicitly states that this does not include entry into several separately ticketed locations, including the Great Pyramid. (Egyptian Monuments)

Current foreign-adult admission for the Great Pyramid interior is separately listed at EGP 1,000, and area entry is also required. (Egyptian Monuments)

So a traveler wanting both current area entry and the Great Pyramid interior should not budget:

EGP 700

but currently:

EGP 1,700

before considering transport, guide or other extras.

Decide whether going inside a pyramid matters to you before you arrive.

Seeing the Great Pyramid and entering the Great Pyramid are two different experiences — and two different costs.

If the interior matters, budget it deliberately.

If what you want is the landscape, scale and exterior monuments, don't assume an additional ticket is automatically necessary.
